Indonesian authorities received some fair criticism regarding a lack of progress in the investigation following the second terrorist bombing of Bali on October 1, 2005 . Media reports suggest that the remains of the suicide bombers should have been identified easily and the investigation further advanced. Plenty of progress had, indeed, been made, and police had actually been staking out the safehouse of Jemaah Islamiya (JI) bomb-maker Azahari Husin for 10 days when an assault on the residence ended in the death of Azahari and three colleagues. However, the “Demolition Man’s” most important accomplice, Noordin Mohammad Top, eluded capture and is now the subject of a nationwide manhunt. Noordin, a fellow Malaysian and member of JI, is a logistical expert regarded highly for his skills at recruitment and operational financing. The psychology motivations identified in the press behind Azahari’s actions are quite interesting. As a Ph.D. in engineering, he had become a lecturer at Malaysia’s University of Technology until he left his wife and went underground in 2001 when that country cracked down Islamic radicalism. Analysts allege his radicalization occurred after his wife contracted throat cancer in the early 1990s; she subsequently survived. He is thought to have learned his bomb-making skills in Afghanistan in the late 1990s and honed, and perhaps even taught, his skills at Muslim training camps in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. Additionally, he is suspected to be the author of JI’s bomb-making manual first discussed in the WAR Report in February 2005 (WAR Report). Upon JI operational commander Hamabali’s arrest in August 2003, Azahiri was viewed as a likely successor.
