More than 1,500 civilians fled from conflict zones in Sri Lanka’s northeast as the United Nations said it has “grave fears” for an employee and three family members held by Tamil Tiger rebels. The civilians sought the protection of soldiers today, taking the total number of refugees in the last three months to 39,000, the government said in a statement on its Web site.
