Confronted by pro-government demonstrators who threw rocks and fired homemade mortars, the opposition leader Eduardo Montealegre called off a march in the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, on Tuesday aimed at protesting local elections that he says were rigged by President Daniel Ortega’s left-wing Sandinista party. “We will keep fighting for democracy in Nicaragua,” Mr. Montealegre, who had been a candidate for the mayor of Managua, said at a rally as explosions rang out around him.
