EU freezes almost €500 million in assistance to Bulgaria

The European Commission froze hundreds of millions in aid to Bulgaria Wednesday citing corruption, organized crime and spending irregularities. The move prompted Bulgaria’s opposition party to call for a confidence vote against the Socialist-led government. The European Commission indefinitely froze €486 million (US$774 million) in aid and blacklisted two Bulgarian government agencies handling EU funds.
