President Horst Köhler announced Thursday that he would seek a second term, setting up a probable replay of the last election that would also pit the governing coalition parties against each other. Köhler made the announcement a year and a day before the vote is scheduled to take place. In a short statement, he said that he wanted to continue “on the path of change and preservation.” He added that he was not afraid of “democratic competition,” but that he would not campaign for the office, which is meant to be apolitical.
