Gordon Brown will today attempt to steady the nerves of Labour MPs after a run of poor opinion polls raised fears in the party that David Cameron could be on course for victory at the next election. The prime minister will use an appearance at the weekly meeting of the parliamentary Labour party to assure MPs that the government remains on course for what he has described as the “tough decisions” of 2008.
