A former member of the Dutch Parliament who has been threatened with death for criticizing Islam asked the European Union on Thursday to pay for her around-the-clock protection while in the United States, saying that Europe had a responsibility to defend freedom of expression. In an appeal to members of the European Parliament, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who was born in Somalia but holds Dutch nationality, said her situation had become impossible since the Netherlands cut off financing for her security while abroad.
