South Korea’s president-elect Lee Myung-bak said he hopes to persuade North Korea that its people would benefit if the country gives up its nuclear programmes. In an apparent attempt to dispel concerns that he may take a hardline stance towards the north, Mr Lee – in his first major engagement with foreign journalists since his election victory in December – told foreign correspondents based in Seoul that his government will be patient and prudent in their dealings with Pyongyang.
