The Algerian coast guard arrested more than 64 Algerians attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe on Wednesday and Thursday (January 10th), AFP reported. Twenty-six illegal immigrants on board two boats were arrested Thursday off the coast of Beni-Saf, in the Ain Témouchent region. The day before, twenty illegal immigrants were arrested on the open sea north of El Kala, in the El Tarf region, while 18 other would-be immigrants were stopped between the Sidi Salem and Seybouse beaches, near Annaba. According to official navy sources, Algeria arrested approximately 1,500 illegal immigrants in 2007, up from 1,016 in 2006. Full Story
