Prime Minister Romano Prodi of Italy said Thursday that the budget deficit this year would be significantly below the official government target, thanks in part to his measures to combat tax evasion. In his end-of-year news conference, Prodi said the deficit would amount to about 2 percent of gross domestic product, compared with the official forecast of 2.4 percent, as revenues continued to exceed expectations.
