Thousands of people protested against violence by the Basque separatist group ETA in Madrid on Tuesday, following the shooting death of one Spanish civil guard member and the wounding of another. It was the first time since Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero took office in March 2004 that Spaniards were asked by parties across the political spectrum to gather in a protest to condemn ETA.
