The Security Council voted unanimously Monday to extend the U.N. observer mission in Georgia, expressing “serious concern” at violence that has escalated tensions between Georgia and the breakaway region of Abkhazia. The council asked Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to establish “an intensive and meaningful dialogue” between the two sides, and bring about a Georgian-Abkhaz meeting at the highest level, with the aim of achieving “a lasting and comprehensive settlement.” Full Story
