An ex-general who wants to use the army to end growing violence in Guatemala is effectively tied with his center-left rival ahead of the Nov. 4 presidential runoff, according to a poll released Friday. The survey published by the newspaper El Periodico gave former head of military intelligence Otto Perez Molina 39.8 percent support against 37.3 percent for Alvaro Colom, a soft-spoken former businessman.
