French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday kicked off a rare Security Council summit devoted to international efforts to settle the continent’s festering conflicts such as Darfur. The 90-minute meeting, which opened at 3 pm (1900 GMT), followed the unanimous adoption by the 15-member body earlier Tuesday of a resolution approving sending a European Union-UN force to Chad and the Central African Republic to protect civilians from the spillover of the Darfur conflict.
