German government approves 1-year extension to troops’ Afghan mission

Germany’s government approved a one-year extension to the increasingly unpopular mission of German peacekeeping troops and reconnaissance jets in Afghanistan on Wednesday, a decision that will need parliament’s approval. Germany has nearly 3,000 troops serving in NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, largely in the relatively peaceful north.
