A court in ex-Soviet Georgia sentenced 12 opposition activists to jail terms on Friday for plotting a coup, a verdict slammed by defence lawyers as “political” and built on “lousy lies.” The 12 defendants, who said the charges against them were to quash dissent against President Mikheil Saakashvili, received prison terms of up to eight-and-a-half years, Tbilisi city court spokeswoman Nato Chichuya said.
