The United States came close to executing in early 2005 a secret military operation to capture senior members of Al-Qaeda in PakistanÂs tribal areas, The New York Times reported on its website Saturday. But citing unnamed intelligence and military officials, the newspaper said the operation was aborted at the last minute after top administration officials decided it was too risky and could jeopardize relations with Pakistan.
