Prosecutors investigate beatings of Kremlin critics

Prosecutors have launched a criminal case against police who used truncheons to break up an opposition rally in Russia’s second city in April, the St Petersburg city prosecutor’s office said on Wednesday. The investigation into police actions against anti-Kremlin protesters is a rare case in modern Russia where authorities have little tolerance for street rallies and President Vladimir Putin has dismissed such actions as staged by “marginal groups”.
