Ireland’s Ahern heading for third term

Bertie Ahern, defying predictions of his downfall, headed Saturday for an unprecedented third straight term as Irish prime minister after his party fared best in the country’s general election. With results in for all but a handful of seats, RTE state radio predicted Ahern’s centre-right Fianna Fail would capture 78 seats after receiving 41.6 per cent of first preference votes under Ireland’s complex voting system. Though well ahead of its closest rival, Fianna Fail would still be five seats shy of the 83 needed for a majority in the 166-seat Dail (lower house of parliament) and would need to find coalition partners.
