Chile’s Ministry of the Interior released a report Tuesday indicating street muggings (snatch and run crimes) had increased 19.2 percent in the country during the first four months of 2007. The troublesome announcement comes eight months after Chile’s government changed the legal classification of the crime from a felony to a misdemeanor in order to lesson the crisis facing the nation’s overcrowded prisons.
