Authorities in Georgia’s breakaway region of South Ossetia on Friday launched a blockade of all ethnic Georgian villages in the province and demanded that the central government withdraw its police troops from the settlements. South Ossetian officials blocked the region’s main road around the Georgian villages, hampering villagers’ access to Georgia proper and Russia. The move was an apparent response to Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili’s decision Thursday to formalize control over the villages by issuing a decree setting up a provisional administration loyal to Tbilisi.
