A fast-moving wildfire burned out of control on an island off the coast of Southern California on Thursday, forcing authorities to evacuate residents on the outskirts of a popular tourist town. The fire broke out on Catalina Island, about 22 miles (35 km) off the coast of Los Angeles, shortly after noon and quickly blackened some 500 acres (200 hectares) as crews raced equipment across the water on military hovercraft.
