A Russian military helicopter was shot down on Friday in the mountains of Chechnya, killing at least 18 service members and marking the most lethal day for Russian authorities in the volatile North Caucasus region since late in 2005. The circumstances surrounding the crash were not fully clear, but Russian officials said the helicopter, an Mi-8 transport aircraft, was struck by ground fire as it was flying in a three-helicopter formation ferrying troops to a skirmish against rebels in the district of Shatoi.
