Formerly part of czarist Russia, the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were independent between the world wars. Germany and the Soviet Union divided Eastern Europe in their 1939 pact, and the Baltic states fell into the Soviet sphere. The Red Army moved in mid-1940. Full Story
