Israel’s defense minister told the head of the United Nations on Saturday that the U.N.-brokered cease-fire in southern Lebanon is endangered by Hezbollah militants, who continue to hold two captured Israeli soldiers and receive arms shipments from Syria. Defense Minister Amir Peretz Peretz met Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon at the start of Ban’s first visit to Israel since taking office. The secretary-general is to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas at his Ramallah headquarters on Sunday and hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and other Israeli officials in Jerusalem on Monday.
