Iranians poured into the streets Sunday to mark the 28th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution as part of an event that also is widely seen as a national referendum on Iran’s disputed nuclear program. In the capital, Tehran, hundreds of thousands of people chanted slogans in support of Iran’s nuclear activities including: “Nuclear energy is our right” and “Death to America!” Some demonstrators carried banners highlighting defiant statement’s made by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as a loudspeaker told the crowd that the rallies were the “response of the Iranian nation to the illegal and invalid U.N.
