Fiji’s coup leader and interim prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama has backed down from veiled threats to ban imports from Australia and New Zealand and expel their expatriates. The Fijian military commander, angered by sanctions imposed by the two countries following the December 5 coup, said last week Fiji could retaliate, citing the two countries’ exports and expatriates living in Fiji.
