The United States will pledge nearly $770 million to help rebuild Lebanon this year, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Wednesday as the U.S. and other countries moved to help the fragile Beirut government fend off pressure from Syria, Iran and others. The money is more than twice last year’s U.S. pledge, reflecting Lebanon’s rebuilding needs after a 34-day war between Israel and militants from Hezbollah, which is backed by Syria and Iran.
