IN the first tangible manifestation of the new spirit of co-operation between India and Pakistan, the two countries yesterday began a joint survey of a disputed maritime zone in the Rann of Kutch region off the Gujarat coast that has long bedevilled bilateral relations and caused armed conflict. The concerted attempt to resolve the so-called Sir Creek border row follows hard on the heels of the crucial visit to Islamabad at the weekend by Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee and is seen as the precursor to solving far bigger issues like Kashmir.
