Egyptian authorities on Wednesday renewed the detention of 36 members of the opposition Muslim Brotherhood, including one of its top leaders, for another 15 days, a Brotherhood official said. The renewed custody of the activists, some of whom were arrested in December, came a day after a criminal court in the northern Egyptian town of Zaqaziq ordered 15 others to be released, Mohammad Ali said. The 15, detained in sweeps through the Nile Delta last week, have yet to be actually released from custody. The 36 still in detention, including Khayrat al-Shater, the movement’s financier and third-ranking official, were picked up in a wide-ranging crackdown on the movement under way since December.
