The United States called on authorities in Bangladesh to guarantee the fairness of elections scheduled for this month, amid violent protests by opposition supporters who say the vote is rigged in favor of the outgoing ruling party. The State Department’s number two diplomat, Under Secretary of State Nicholas Burns, spoke with the head of Bangladesh’s caretaker government to urge the creation of “conditions that would allow for free, fair and transparent election,” department spokesman Sean McCormack said Monday.
