Indian security forces stepped up counterinsurgency operations Sunday against rebels blamed for killing 56 people in a spate of attacks in recent days in the country’s remote northeast, an official said. The latest attacks in Assam state were the worst in years and were widely seen as an attempt by insurgents to boost waning support among the impoverished area’s indigenous people and to force the government to resume peace talks.
