Nine priests of China’s unofficial underground Roman Catholic Church have been arrested in the northern province of Hebei, the Catholic press agency Asianews said. Asianews, a Rome-based agency with Vatican connections, said the arrested clergymen had met for studies in a community some 30 kilometres (18 miles) south of their diocese at Baoding. The motive for the arrests was not known, “but it’s probable they were arrested just because they met over the Christmas period for a prayer session in a place that has not been recognised by the government,” said Asianews.
