A multiparty alliance led by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said it would contest elections on Jan. 22, after officials extended the deadline for candidate nominations by two days. “We have decided to contest the election and will submit nominations on Tuesday,” said Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, a senior leader of Hasina’s Awami League. “We have made the decision in view of the extension of nomination filing time and assurances by the election commission for holding a free and fair election,” he told reporters.
