A Pakistani man was convicted Wednesday of financially supporting a militant separatist group in India, federal prosecutors announced. Khalid Awan, of Garden City, was convicted by a federal jury after a two-week trial in Brooklyn and faces up to 45 years in prison. Awan, 44, was charged with helping the Khalistan Commando Force, a Sikh secessionist group that operated in India’s Punjab state. The group, founded in 1986, is considered a terrorist organization in India and is said to be responsible for the deaths of thousands of people through bombings, sabotage and assassinations.
