Authorities declared a state of emergency in a province in southeastern Peru and threatened to arrest any demonstrators after protests against the local governor in which 85 people, including 63 police, were injured, officials said on Wednesday. The violence took place on Tuesday in the city of Abancay in the poor farming region of Apurimac, where demonstrators marched on the regional government to protest the governor’s decision to transfer funds to another part of the province.
