Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Sunday that a ceasefire to end five months of fighting in the Gaza Strip may lead to “real negotiations” with the Palestinians. Olmert said Israel would show restraint in coming days over violations of the ceasefire by Palestinian militants. “I hope very much they (Palestinians) will show responsibility and goodwill. This could be the beginning of a serious, real, open and direct negotiation between Israel and the Palestinian Authority … leading towards a full settlement between Israel and the Palestinians,” Olmert said.
