Thai Army Chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin made no direct comment on Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont’s recent claim that the Tom Yam Kung restaurant chain in Malaysia is helping to finance insurgents in the far South, but said that he expects the premier will call on him for discussions on the matter soon. Speaking to journalists at Suvarnabhumi Airport upon returning from Pakistan Thursday morning, Gen Sonthi, also chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS), neither denied nor confirm the validity of the premier’s remarks, but he cited the religious practice of Islam which requires believers to set aside part of their income for donation as part of merit-making after being taxed.
