A network of Thai restaurant franchisees called ”Tom Yam Kung” operating in Malaysia has helped fund the separatist insurgency in the deep South, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said yesterday. Gen Surayud said cash donations from the restaurants coupled with protection money extorted from Chinese, Thai-Buddhist, and Thai-Muslim businessmen in the region by gangs of separatist sympathisers were some of the financial sources for rebel movements.
