The parliament must impose tougher punishments on extremists if it wants to crack down on crimes motivated by ethnicity, religion or political affiliation, the nation’s senior law enforcement officer told the State Duma on Wednesday. “In spite of the grave public threat posed by manifestations of extremism, these crimes are still classified as medium-tier offenses in the Criminal Code,” Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said.
