Australia yesterday confirmed it had sent extra defence force staff to Suva, but denied claims it had smuggled in a band of police officers with an undeclared haul of weapons to intervene in Fiji’s escalating political crisis. Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said additional defence staff sent to the high commission in Suva would help evacuate Australians should the confrontation between the Fijian Government and the Pacific nation’s military become a violent coup.
