Thailand’s junta leader on Thursday said the armed forces had raised their guard against rising political volatility in the wake of the suicide of a Bangkok taxi driver who hanged himself to protest the September 19 coup. “We are on alert,” said General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, before departing for a tour of Thailand’s deep South where a separatist struggle has claimed 1,700 lives over the past three years.
