Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe on Wednesday defended his order for troops to rescue hostages held by rebels after being assailed by families of kidnap victims worried about the safety of their kin. Since his May re-election, Uribe, a Washington ally who has led a U.S.-backed crackdown on rebels, had moderated his tone on talks with rebels over the hostages, including three U.S. contract workers snatched more than three years ago.
