Japan’s government hailed its first electoral victory under new Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as a strong vote for his handling of the North Korean nuclear crisis and regional diplomatic efforts. Abe, who is known for his hardline stance against Kim Jong-Il’s regime, saw his ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) cruise to victory in two weekend by-elections in the city of Osaka and in Kanagawa, a prefecture west of Tokyo.
