Fiji’s Prime Minister has urged the nation not to be alarmed over a threat by the military commander to force the Government’s resignation. Commodore Frank Bainimarama on Tuesday gave Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase an ultimatum to drop plans for an amnesty deal for those involved in a 2000 coup or be forced from office. “I urge all citizens to remain calm and carry on with their daily lives in the normal way,” Mr Qarase said after a series of emergency meetings with military and police representatives.
