New front opens in Sri Lanka fighting after record military losses

Sri Lanka’s warring parties have opened a new front in the island’s east after the government admitted losing 129 soldiers on the northern Jaffna peninsula, the defence ministry and rebel sources said. The security forces and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) blamed each other for the flareup in the eastern district of Ampara from Thursday, a day after heavy fighting in Jaffna.
