Moldova’s separatist Transdniestria region appealed to former Soviet states on Wednesday to recognize its independence after a referendum, but such moves were unlikely to be forthcoming. Voters in Transdniestria, which broke away from Moldova in 1990 in Soviet times, voted by more than 97 percent last month to uphold the region’s independence and eventually join Russia. Full Story
