U.S. seeks balance in Kazakh relations
The day before Vice President Dick Cheney came to Kazakhstan in May and expressed admiration for the country’s political development, prosecutors accused the two most prominent American democracy organizations working here of illegal conduct in a letter delivered to the American Embassy. Fearing prosecution under a law that forbids “material assistance” to political parties, the organizations – the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs and the International Republican Institute – suspended their work and have yet to resume.
