European data protection officials agreed Tuesday to investigate further allegations that a Belgian-based company’s sharing of confidential banking records with U.S. authorities for anti-terror probes could have violated EU laws. After their talks, the European Union’s 25 national data protection officers said the problem raised “immediate concerns about the lack of transparency which has surrounded” a secret transfer deal between the U.S. Treasury and Belgian-based Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or SWIFT.
