Pakistan’s military ruler President Pervez Musharraf laughed off rumours of an attempted coup against him while he was in the United States, saying his country was not a “banana republic”. A nationwide power blackout on Sunday sparked speculation about a takeover while a surprise medical check-up on Musharraf, who himself grabbed power from a civilian government in 1999, fuelled the uncertainty.
